ROSE DES SABLES – ITS ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION

The text describes rose des sables, a rose-shaped stone that can reach significant size and weight. This stone is formed by crystallization of soluble minerals, mainly gypsum, in soft soils such as sand or clay, mainly in the deserts of Mexico, Tunisia or Qatar. Crystallization occurs when liquid gypsum in groundwater evaporates under the effect of heat. This crystallization can be compared to the formation of salt crystals in a container of salt water left to heat. Sand roses can be buried up to a metre below ground, but winds often dig them up and damage them, returning them to their dusty state.
