Tiger’s Eye Geological Formation

Tiger’s eye is the result of a fascinating geological process known as quartz replacement. When crocidolite, a fibrous blue mineral also known as Blue Asbestos, undergoes a metamorphosis, it takes on the intriguing appeal of quartz while retaining its unique fibrous visual and energetic qualities.

The interaction of the minerals and the golden, iron-stained colours creates a visual phenomenon similar to the changing gaze of a tiger, hence its evocative name.

When Crocidolite retains its blue colour during the process, it is known as Falcon’s Eye or Hawk’s Eye. The two varieties can be combined.

Rough Tiger’s Eye – Raw Beauty

As a polycrystalline material, Tiger’s Eye rough stones take on the shape of the rock formation and do not have a crystalline form.

Historical Significance of the Tiger’s Eye – Through the Ages

The Tiger’s Eye, with its captivating interplay of light and colour, has occupied a significant place in human history, revered for its unique appearance and supposed metaphysical properties.

Throughout cultures and civilisations, this precious stone has been admired and worn for its resemblance to the watchful eyes of a tiger and the strength it symbolises. Let’s delve into the historical significance of the Tiger’s Eye, exploring its use, symbolism and impact through the ages.

Ancient Egypt and Roman times :

The historical journey of Tiger’s Eye begins in ancient Egypt, where this precious stone was believed to possess protective qualities. It was used to create amulets and talismans worn to protect against negative energies and provide a sense of security.

The bold, captivating appearance of Tiger’s Eye, with its colour-changing bands reminiscent of a tiger’s gaze, was in keeping with the ancient Egyptians’ respect for the strength and power of the animal kingdom.

Roman soldiers were known to wear tiger’s eye talismans in battle, believing it gave them courage, concentration and protection against danger. The sparkling play of light from the stone was seen as a symbol of the divine, supposed to provide guiding light even in the darkest of times.

African and Amerindian beliefs :

In various African cultures, Tiger’s Eye was considered a stone of power and vitality. It was thought to invoke the energy and strength of the tiger, a revered animal associated with courage and tenacity.

Similarly, the Amerindian tribes also regarded Tiger’s Eye with great respect. They saw it as a talisman capable of connecting them with the spirit of the animal world and enabling them to take advantage of the tiger’s attributes for hunting and survival.

Jewellery and decorative arts :

Beyond its metaphysical properties, tiger’s eye has found its place in the world of jewellery and decorative arts. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was often used in intaglio engravings and cameos.

Its unique optical effect, known as chatoyance or “cat’s eye effect”, added an extra layer of fascination to the jewellery pieces.

Metaphysical properties of Tiger’s Eye – Illuminating energies

Tiger’s eye, a shimmering and fascinating gem, has long been associated with metaphysical and esoteric properties. This precious stone, which takes its name from its appearance reminiscent of a tiger’s eye, is renowned for its soothing and protective spiritual effects.

On a metaphysical level, the tiger’s eye is often seen as a talisman of courage and self-confidence. It is said to strengthen the will, helping its wearer to overcome the fears and doubts that can stand in the way.

In meditation, tiger’s eye is often used to balance the chakras, particularly the solar plexus chakra, which is associated with self-confidence and inner strength.

One of the most famous properties of tiger’s eye is its ability to protect against negative energies. This stone is thought to act as a shield, repelling negative influences and toxic thoughts.

Tiger’s Eye Varieties

Falcon’s eye or blue tiger’s eye can sometimes be considered as a variety of tiger’s eye, although the two are often considered as separate varieties. This hue appears when the transformed stone retains the blue colour of Crocidolite.

Tiger’s Eye Colors

Oeil de tigre comes in a spectrum of dynamic colours, from golden brown to vibrant reds. The interplay of colour and light creates a shimmering effect, reminiscent of the watchful eye of a tiger. This captivating visual presentation contributes to the appeal and popularity of the stone in jewellery.

Hawk’s eye varies from pale grey to deep blue.

Durability and Wearability of Tiger’s Eye

With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, Tiger’s Eye has excellent durability, making it suitable for a variety of jewellery applications. Its enduring charm and timeless appeal ensure that tiger’s eye jewellery remains a treasured piece of jewellery for years to come.

Tiger’s Eye Enhancements – Preserving natural beauty

The natural beauty of Tiger’s Eye requires minimal enhancement, often retaining its inherent charm and qualities. Its distinctive shimmer and energetic properties remain intact, making it a sought-after gemstone in its authentic form.

However, due to its popularity, Tiger’s Eye can be bleached and tinted to any colour. It is also possible to create a cat’s eye effect using heat treatments.

Synthetic Tiger’s Eye – Nature in the Lab

Synthetic Tiger’s Eye is not currently available on the market.

Tiger’s Eye Imitations – Discerning the Authentic

When looking for Tiger’s Eye gems, it is essential to be aware of imitations. Resins, plastics and glass can imitate its appearance. Purchasing from reputable sources and seeking certification guarantee the authenticity of Tiger’s Eye gems.

Tiger’s Eye Care – Preserving natural beauty
