How to maintain jade to make it more and more moist? The secret lies in the correct “hydration”!

Jade Care Guide

How to Care for Jade: Cleaning, Storage and What to Avoid

Jade is valued for its colour, texture and polish. Keeping a jade jewel looking its best is usually a matter of gentle cleaning, careful storage and knowing how the stone has been treated.

Does jade need “hydration”?

Jade does not need soaking or a water treatment to maintain its quality. The word “moist” is sometimes used to describe the appearance of a fine polish, but soaking a piece will not restore its material, colour or finish.

Start with the stone and the setting

“Jade” commonly refers to jadeite or nephrite. These are different materials, and a finished piece may also have been treated, dyed, assembled with other components or set using adhesives. Care can therefore vary from one item to another.

Check any information supplied with the jewellery, especially details about treatments and the metal setting. If you are unsure, ask the seller or a qualified jeweller before using water or a cleaning product. You can read ICIA’s Jade reference for more background.

A gentle routine for everyday care

  1. Wipe after wearing. Use a clean, soft cloth to remove fingerprints and surface residue.
  2. Use water sparingly. If the care instructions allow it, wipe the stone with a soft cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water. Avoid leaving the piece to soak.
  3. Dry it promptly. Pat the stone and setting dry with a soft cloth, paying attention to crevices.
  4. Check the setting. If a stone moves, catches on fabric or looks loose, stop wearing the piece and have it checked.

For jewellery with unknown treatments, glued components, delicate settings or other materials, follow the maker’s instructions or consult a jeweller before cleaning it.

What to avoid

Skip harsh cleaning methods

  • Ultrasonic and steam cleaners, unless a professional confirms they are suitable for the exact piece.
  • Bleach, acids, abrasive powders and strong household cleaners.
  • Long soaking, salt water and unverified “recharging” or cleaning recipes.

Protect it from avoidable damage

  • Sudden temperature changes, prolonged heat and direct sunlight.
  • Hard knocks, drops and contact with rough surfaces.
  • Loose storage alongside jewellery that may scratch or chip it.

These precautions are especially useful when the stone’s treatment, setting or other materials in the piece are unknown.

How to store jade jewellery

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined compartment. Keep it away from harder gemstones and metal parts that could rub against the surface. Before putting a piece away, make sure it is dry and that its clasp or setting is secure.

For valuable, antique or treated jade, keep the purchase and care information with the piece. That information can help a jeweller recommend appropriate cleaning and repairs later.

If jade looks dull

A change in appearance may come from surface residue, everyday wear, a worn polish or a problem with the setting. First use a soft, dry cloth. If the appearance does not improve, ask a jeweller to inspect the piece instead of applying oil, polish or a home treatment.

Cleaning can remove surface dirt, but it cannot change the jade’s underlying quality or guarantee a lasting change in lustre.

Frequently asked questions

Should I soak jade in water to keep it hydrated?

No. Jade does not need soaking to maintain its quality. For routine care, follow the instructions for the specific stone and jewellery setting.

Can I clean jade jewellery with an ultrasonic cleaner?

Do not assume it is safe. Treatments, fractures, the setting and any adhesives or accompanying materials may affect whether a cleaning method is suitable. Ask a jeweller who can assess the exact piece.

Are jadeite and nephrite the same material?

No. Both are called jade, but jadeite and nephrite are distinct materials. Identification and treatment details can affect how a particular item should be cared for.
